PAID DUES: A Black Table Talk conversation about Returning Citizens
Post incarceration is not prison. Yet, in America, more than 6 million adults, roughly 1 in 37, live under some form of correctional control. This podcast is an in-depth discussion about those who have paid their dues to society but are still not free. More importantly, through our Black Table Talk, we’ll chime in on how our failed criminal legal system disproportionally affects Black and Brown communities.

Our guest is Tony Lewis Jr and we invited him to our podcast because he is a native Washingtonian, community leader, re-entry expert, activist, and has focused a great part of his career on families and children with incarcerated parents. He's experienced first-hand the consequences of having a parent sentence to a federal prison and openly speaks about how it has affected his trajectory. In our episode we focus on the city, the criminal justice system, and Tony's life. Enjoy!

We invited Councilmember Trayon White to speak on our first podcast episode about the bills and measures he's working on regarding Returning Citizens. Not only that, but because of the past guidance and mentorship he provided to our host for this week, Councilmember Trayon White was able to see how his former youth football player, grew up to be an advocate for criminal justice reform post incarceration. It’s not every day that you can see someone’s journey come full circle.

The fundamental premise of restorative justice practices is that people are happier, more cooperative and productive, and more likely to make positive changes when those in positions of authority do things with them, rather than to them or for them.
The National Reentry Network for Returning Citizens (NRNRC) has started a podcast, synonymous with our Black Table Talk, to speak with Returning Citizens, community advocates, policy makers, and other criminal justice reform agents, to give them a platform to voice their thoughts on the matters that preclude them from communities and keep them at the margins of our society.
Moreover, our podcast testimonies will help shape the reentry story and show why organizations like the NRNRC are necessary.
Create a society that listens to those most vulnerable and make the lives of all those viewed as expendable, be filled with triumphs, rather than obstacles that keep them eternally locked up.
